Nobody planned for all of this to land in the same week. That’s not how live music works, and it’s part of why covering it is so addictive. Shakira wrapping her post-FIFA World Cup concert in New York City by bringing out Tyla, Ed Sheeran, and Burna Boy in rapid succession is the kind of moment that makes you realize the show itself, the one everyone already bought tickets for, was somehow just the warmup. And then, across town at Madison Square Garden, RUSH launched the first of four consecutive nights at one of the most storied concert venues on the planet, which is a sentence that would have seemed like a fantasy a few years ago.
It’s a lot. But we’re going to get through all of it.

Let’s not kid ourselves: For two decades, Shakira has been one of the most captivating live performers around. And with her post-World Cup New York concert, she was determined to remind the world of that fact. After all, her sold-out Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour has already generated immense buzz, and she simply capitalized on the momentum of her recent FIFA Final appearance. Yet, the show was just getting started, as Shakira was quick to unveil the illustrious guest performers that joined her on stage later that night: Tyla, Ed Sheeran, and Burna Boy. Three notable names. Three distinct corners of the world. Shakira managed to draw an astonishing array of music legends, fitting for a stadium-sized performance in New York City after the biggest soccer show in the Western Hemisphere for a generation. So, if you were lucky enough to be there, you should bask in the glow of those magical moments. We are certainly jealous of your experience and hope you made the right choice!
While the sheer star power of the guest appearances is undeniably impressive, the significance of the performance extends far beyond that. A closer inspection highlights the extent of Shakira’s reach and star power. In particular, her decision to invite Tyla, one of the most influential voices in Afro-pop, to perform alongside such Afro-pop icons as Ed Sheeran and Burna Boy – one of the most prominent voices in African music – underscores the magnitude of Shakira’s success in contemporary global music.
RUSH AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
RUSH at Madison Square Garden. Four Nights. Enough Said. We could spend an eternity on this, and probably should. Rush’s decision to open a four-night stand at Madison Square Garden is the kind of booking that makes you feel simultaneously so good you could cry and irrational about how good it feels to be a fan of this band. It’s one of the most technically proficient, brainy, and popular rock bands in history doing what it does best in the arena where it was born
MSG has seen them play many times, but to get four nights there is special. Partly because it reflects an appreciation of a band that has waited patiently to announce every tour date, partly because their catalog grows more thrilling with every listen, and partly because no member of Rush has ever given a half-assed performance in his life. So if you missed out on getting tickets for any of the nights, do yourself a favor and get on that. Some things aren’t going to happen twice.

System of a Down and Faith No More are set to do something remarkable: both bands have been invited and plan to participate in a co-headlining Australian/New Zealand stadium tour in early 2027, something that makes perfect sense given that both acts have spent their careers in the overlapping nexus of metalcore experimentation and stadium-rock excess.
Jodeci is set to embark on a 35th-anniversary tour celebrating the release of the band’s seminal debut album, which means that the band is doing what any good steward of an iconic catalog would: dipping into the deep catalog of a group that helped define the early ’90s R&B landscape as much as anything else, pulling out its best material, and re-presenting it for a new audience primed to receive it.
John Mulaney announced a nine-city, nine-show stand in New York City, starting at the end of September and culminating in Madison Square Garden. This is a wildly ambitious undertaking for any comedian, especially given the sheer density of the engagement (most stand-up tours only have one or two dates in the city), but Mulaney is due for a moment like this, and he is currently writing and performing some of the richest, most evolved material of his career.
Orville Peck and his “Man Turned Mule Tour” deserve more attention than he’s getting from the national critical press, as Peck is one of the true innovators in modern country/Americana music, and his dramatic performances and masked persona push the boundaries of what the format is capable of in ways no other contemporary act is doing.
Dark Star Orchestra is set to honor the 35th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s album Reckoning with a special three-set acoustic/electric concert as part of its 2026 fall tour. Part of the reason that Reckoning remains one of the darkest, most thrilling entries in the Dead’s large and varied catalog is because of the special care that went into its creation, which the musicians of Dark Star Orchestra recognize, and they’ve planned this special show as a tribute to the kind of excellence that the Grateful Dead was capable of.

The Surprise Guest Moments That Broke the Internet This Week
Tame Impala bringing out Jennie of BLACKPINK at Boston’s TD Garden to perform their collaboration “Dracula” live for the first time is the kind of moment that fans of both artists will be writing about for the rest of the year. Kevin Parker’s psychedelic production universe and Jennie’s particular vocal and cultural presence don’t seem like they should occupy the same stage, right up until the moment they do and it becomes immediately obvious that of course they belong together. Boston got that reveal first.
Chris Stapleton and Grace Potter delivering a CCR classic together at The Gorge Amphitheatre is one of the more naturally inevitable pairings in recent live music history. Stapleton’s voice occupies a lineage that connects directly to the roots-rock tradition that Creedence Clearwater Revival helped define. Potter’s vocal range and the particular ferocity she brings to any song she touches make her the ideal collaborator for material of that weight. The Gorge adds its own dimension to everything performed on its stage. This was three things that were individually already great becoming something greater together for one night.
Knocked Loose and Denzel Curry performing “Hive Mind” at a Brooklyn skatepark is the surprise guest appearance of the week that feels most like its own genre of event. A hardcore band and a hip-hop artist whose respective approaches to the aggressive end of their genres share more DNA than either’s fan base always acknowledges, performing a heavy collaborative track in an outdoor urban space that was never built for concert production. The people in that Brooklyn skatepark were not expecting this. That’s what made it unforgettable.

Some concerts are events; some, milestones. But every so often one is something transcendent, something that renders the medium itself insufficient, like a cathedral that no mere building can contain. Linkin Park’s headlining set at Rock in Rio on June 21, 2026, was most definitely one of those concerts, and tonight Live Jam brings one of the most extraordinary sets of modern rock history to you, our loyal audience, as this week’s Friday Night Lights.
What a week it has been! In addition to Shakira and three surprise guests, RUSH saw the band play four shows at Madison Square Garden; meanwhile System of a Down and Faith No More were both headed to the southern hemisphere for the first time in their careers. Even better, a skater park in Brooklyn saw Knocked Loose and Denzel Curry sharing the same stage for one night only! The live music week was a rollercoaster with peaks and valleys, and although those valleys saw the cancellation of several Heritage Live concerts, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
